Buddhism is the principle religion of Thailand and approximately 95% of citizen are Theravada Buddhists. There are 40,000 temples (400 are in Bangkok) and about 300,000 monks all around Thailand.
The well-known temples among visitors are ; Wat Phra Kaew or the temple of Emerald Buddha, Wat Arun or the temple of dawn, Wat Pho or the traditional Thai massage school.

A charming culture and amazing monastery in Thailand are attractions for foreign visitors and the media so before entering the temple, see below, these are something you should know;

  • Since the Buddha statues and images represent the Buddha, visitors are asked to behave respectfully to all statues and images.
  • Avoid wearing colorful clothing that expose too much. Dress and prepare your outer appearance in a clean and neat manner.
  • Use proper speech. Do not run around or shout.
  • Women are not allowed to touch monks or even get too close.
  • Take off shoes before entering main chapel.
  • The very front seat in front of statue of Buddha is reserved for monks, so sit to the left or right.
  • No alcohol or entering the temple, if you have consumed alcohol.
  • Buddha statues and images are prohibited to use as a representative for any commercial way
  • If and when you see a monk in the temple, you should clasp your hands together and bow.
  • Illegal to take any Buddha statues out of Thailand without the permission of the Fine Art Department.

    Above are general rule and you must strictly follow all the temple rules while being in temple.
